Kaïa Kater is a Juno Award-winning, Canadian Screen Award-winning and Polaris Prize-longlisted  songwriter and composer of Grenadian-Canadian heritage. A multi-instrumentalist and talented banjo player, Kaia is equally at home composing haunting and inventive Americana and Appalachian folk scores and writing pop songs with a modern twist. Her voice and deft songcraft have garnered acclaim from CBC, BBC Music and Rolling Stone. Her recent film work includes The Porter (CBC/BET) for which she won a Canadian Screen Award for Best Original Song. She also wrote an original song for the SXSW award-winning film My Dead Friend Zoe (Morgan Freeman, Ed Harris), co-written with Dan Romer (Luca, Beasts of the Southern Wild, Lilo & Stitch). She has had songs placed on Global TV’s Mary Kills People and scored the award-winning short documentary Believe in Ghosts. Kaïa has toured internationally, including notable performances at NPR Tiny Desk Concerts and Carnegie Hall. In 2023, Kaïa completed her Slaight Music Composer Residency fellowship with the Canadian Film Centre. Her newest album 'Strange Medicine' was released in 2024 and garnered a JUNO Award for Contemporary Roots Album of the Year. In 2025 she was awarded the prestigious HER Music Prize from SOCAN. Whether she's leading a project or supporting it, Kaïa's guiding principle is to help tell important and oft-forgotten stories.
